Review: At His Mercy

At His Mercy by Shelly Bell
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Awkward when your one night stand turns out to be your professor at college. This story was odd for me. It felt like it was going several different directions. My guess is to make the story a bit more complex with layers, there are several subplots going on. For me, they were not integrated that well and felt a bit klunky. I liked how this story started. Isabella has overcome a terrible trauma in her life and is going to live a little. Intrigued by BDSM, she hits up a club and somehow finds a dominant who takes her for a wild one night stand. Not particularly realistic, but it is erotic and I enjoyed the scene. With a memorable experience, she heads off to university with a light heart. This comes to a screeching halt when her professor whom she also will TA for is the man she slept with. Now from here, I'm expecting some naughty kinky professor/student sex. Whilst there is a bit and it is quite hot, there is a "single white…

Review: Cougar Bait

Cougar Bait by Evangeline Anderson
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

Ready for a whirlwind romance with a little bit of chasing the prey? This book starts up right after the last one. It is recommended to read the books in order but it isn't necessary. Samantha Becker is thrown into a supernatural world when her sister is inducted into the shifter world. Sammie is a no-nonsense science based woman. As a doctor, she is a realistic and these supernatural shifter world has thrown her for a loop. But she doesn't care because she is going to be returning to her sane life. Little does she know that her life saving tactics for Liam Keller has him now sniffing after her.

This story is hilarious. It is fun and lighthearted for the most part. I liked how Liam is a stealthy guy who flies under the radar and plays the "good ole boy". He is sneaky like a cat and catches Sammie completely off guard with his education and knowledge. It just goes to show, looks can be deceiving. The playful…

Review: Shadow Reaper

Shadow Reaper by Christine Feehan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Finally the second book is out! I have been thinking of this series for a while after the first book caught my interest and hooked me in. The second book does not disappoint. Whilst it could be read as a standalone, my preference is to read this series in order.

This book features the brother, Ricco. He has a limited time before he needs to find his mate. Ricco suffered during his time training in Japan. It is horrific what happened to him and I'm stunned. What he did to survive and become the kind of guy he is now is pretty amazing. The fear he still lives with is a bit breath taking. So when a girl comes into his life, Mariko, he is obviously suspicious. Especially as he knows she is the girl he saved when he trained in Japan.

Mariko is my kind of girl. She is a lethal assassin with hair sticks. What more do we need? She does meet the stereotypical Asian dragon lady American males seem to fantasy about. I can not lie, h…

Review: Deep Into Trouble

Deep Into Trouble by Dawn Ryder
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Saxon is a BAMF who takes charge whenever trouble comes looking for him. In this third book in the series, Saxon is ready to take bad guys apart. This third book can be read as a standalone. It would be better to read the books in the order written.

Ms. Ryder is quickly becoming an author I automatically want to read. For those who enjoy Maya Banks' KGI series, Ms. Ryder is the author for you. In this latest book with the sexy Saxon, there is suspense, betrayal and hot sex. Saxon is the quiet killer who showed up in a previous book. I liked his quiet manner of getting things done. He never really becomes riled up. In this book, as the main character, the readers get to see Saxon all hot and bothered by a sexy librarian. Yes, there is a reason why men have a fantasy about librarians and Ginger Boyce is a sterling example of why.

Ginger seems to be a sweet character who is totally out of her element. She's the shy librarian…

The Dean of a Swiss university persuades Sherlock Holmes to investigate the background of a would-be lecturer. To Dr. Watson it seems a very humdrum commission - but who is the mysterious 'Lieserl'? How does her existence threaten the ambitions of the technical assistant level III in Room 86 at the Federal Patents Office in Berne by the name of Albert Einstein? The assignment plunges Holmes and Watson into unfathomable Serbia to solve one of the intractable mysteries of the 20th Century.
In Tim Symonds' previous detective novels, Sherlock Holmes and the Dead Boer At Scotney Castle and Sherlock Holmes And The Case Of The Bulgarian Codex the author based pivotal historic facts and a principal character on real life. So too in thi…

Review: Wicked Kiss

Wicked Kiss by Rebecca Zanetti
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Hoping to find out exactly who set up Simone in this series, book four drags it out a bit and leaves a reader hanging. This book is set in the same time as Simone trying to defend herself against the remaining three council members on the Coven Nine. Victoria is the dumb schlup who is caught up in it because she's in the wrong place at the wrong time. Specifically she sees Simone getting taken and watches witches fighting. Since it is a no-no on the reveal to humans, Victoria (Tori) is taken by the witches to be dealt with and it isn't a simple slap on the wrist.

I'm honestly confused by this book. Usually, Ms. Zanetti writes complicated story lines with well thought out subplots, conflicts and awesome characters. We already have sexy Adam Dunne who is the cousin of Simone. He's a powerful and sexy Enforcer who kicks butt for centuries and is loyal to his family. But in this book, he comes across as totally led by …

Review: Blaze

Blaze by Donna Grant
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Returning to the Dark Kings, this tale features Anson, another dragon king. For those who have not read the previous books in this series, this book can be read as a standalone. Ms. Grant does an excellent job of quick recaps to help a reader get caught up to speed. That being said, it is recommended to read these books in order to understand the nuances between the different secondary characters. In addition, there are several subplots that wind through the multiple books which may be missed if this book is read out of order.

This book definitely appeals to my inner geek. I can easily identify with Devon Abrams. She is a woman working hard up the ranks of her company. She avoids the gossiping politics at work, does a great job and is thorough. So when she's targeted by her own company, she's blindsided. Why is someone who works so hard get penalized? Lucky for Devon, it isn't the first time this has happened to someone in the c…

Review: Obsession

Obsession by Calista Fox
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Roxy Shea is a skittish artist who is doing her best to hide from an ex-lover turned stalker. It is very apparent from the beginning that Roxy is a bundle of nerves who just wants to stay in the background. Her desire to paint and then just hide away is overwhelming from the get go. So when she's been noticed first by Nick and then Hunter, two very public figures, her thin wall of protection comes crashing down.

From a plot perspective, this story needs a bit of work. It's pretty straightforward and the ending is completely anticlimactic. Let's be honest, I didn't read the book for the plot, character development or world building. What caught my attention was the Billionaire theme and the erotic menage. On both fronts, this story delivers. Whilst there is a little back story about Nick and Hunter's break in friendship, it didn't really move me. Even the sad tragic death barely made me lift an eyebrow. I definite…

Review: Physical Forces

Physical Forces by D.D. Ayres
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

New to me author Ms. Ayres pulls me into this romantic suspense. On a lark, I accepted the book to read because it involved K-9. As a dog lover, I can not resist reading books involving K-9 unites. This one is definitely a keeper and now I'm intrigued and want to read the rest of this series.

The story starts off in a humourous scene with Macayla Burkett trying to rescue a runaway dog. Helping her out is Oliver Kelly who is renown in the K-9 world but unrecognized by Macayla. When Macayla's job of rescuing pets takes a nasty turn, it is a good thing Oliver is there to help.

This story kept my attention because it had so many twists and turns. It kept me guessing as to how it would end and who the villains would be. I like being kept in the dark as Macayla tries to solve who is targeting her. I felt badly for Macayla because she is a woman whose heart has been broken by the loss of her dog. She just wants to have a quiet l…

Review: Turn Me Loose

Turn Me Loose by Anne Calhoun
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

This is a series not to be missed. In the latest book, Ms. Calhoun gives Ian Hawthorn his book. The quiet and diligent cop mentioned in a few of the previous books is hot on the tail of a drug lord. Trying to figure out how all the drugs are coming into his city, his path once again crosses Riva Henneman's. The last time Riva and Ian were together, it was not good. They never dated because Ian used Riva as his CI to get what he wanted to close a case. Riva was ruthlessly placed over a barrel. To say their parting was poor is an understatement.

There is more than meets the eye in this book. Ms. Calhoun does an excellent job of showing how everyone has a story with a possible painful past. The ties of blood sometimes lead people down the wrong path. Sometimes it takes people to a place they do not want to go. The sheer cruelty and negligence bestowed upon family members in this book is jaw dropping. What is worse is that it is …

Review: Lethal Lies

Lethal Lies by Rebecca Zanetti
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Another fast paced action packed winner from Ms. Zanetti. Confession time, I no longer read the blurbs of the books written by Ms. Zanetti. This is because I know whatever she writes, I want to read it. She's that good of a writer. She is an automatic read and buy author. In this latest one, I really enjoyed the follow up book two in the Blood Brothers series. Whilst this book can be read as a standalone, it is better when read in order.

Anya Best is a woman on a mission. Her sister is dead and it is all her fault. Technically, it is not as Anya didn't kill her, but Anya's the inspiration for the serial killer. Anya's guilt over her sister's brutal torture and slaying convinces her to join forces with Heath. Heath should not be mixed in this serial murder case because of the ties to his past. He can't resist Anya and she is his weakness to bring the past at the heels of his feet.

The plot in this story kee…

Review: Buck Naked

Buck Naked by Evangeline Anderson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The search for the fountain of youth is over! Well, at least for Sadie Becker. The best thing that could have happened to her is when her ex-husband divorces her for a younger woman. Hurt, she retreats to her mother's cabin and licks her wounds. Oddly enough, as she looks through some of her mother's things, she notices some discrepancies about her mother's past. Specifically, dates that don't match up and a marriage she never knew about. Then even stranger things happen to Sadie. Specifically, her neighbor is a surly jerk and she suddenly looks half her age. What is going on?

This story is hilarious. I enjoyed the constant misunderstandings because of Sadie's rejuvenation. It is amusing to see how so many people expect others to immediately understand their culture when it is so foreign. People judge others purely by physical attributes instead of by actions. It's a sad commentary of our society which M…
